Todd Shaffer's Racing History
I guess in Todd's case, you could say racing is in his blood. His grandfather, W.S. Stutts, raced Go-Karts, as did Todd's father, Ray Shaffer, uncles Roger and Larry Stutts, and his younger brother, Eric "Zip" Shaffer. Todd got his first go-kart when he was 7 years old, but wasn't permitted to officially race until he was 8. By the time Todd was 14, with his father building the engines, Todd had already won 4 Grand National Championships, the fourth championship with an engine he had built himself. Before ending his go-karting career, Todd won 4 more Grand National Championships for a total of 8. In 1980, just after graduating from high school, Todd was all set to join the U.S. Air Force. But the day before he was to take his oath, he got a call from Chuck Link of Link Enterprises in Dover, Delaware. He offered Todd a full-time job racing Go-Karts. Todd immediately accepted the offer and spent the next 3 years racing all over the country in places like Daytona and Talladega.
